All elements of the architecture and design of this home exist to enhance your beach vacation in this very special village of Hawaii. The open plan allows the trade winds to circulate throughout. A Hawaii architectural element, the Dickey-style roof, with its graceful curves and ceramic tile in natural green tones, is shallower in pitch to create projecting eaves that envelope the house in a cocoon of shade and allow windows to stay open during (rare, in Puako) rains.

Built in 2007, but new to the rental market, Sandyside uses architectural elements of the Japanese folk style to give its open two-story great room the effect of an the indoor courtyard. The focal point is the 30-foot cathedral ceiling, held aloft by large wood pillars and rough-hewn beams. Seven-foot sliding glass/screened doors expand the airiness to include the outdoors.
Even the second-story master suite overlooks the free-flowing living, dining, kitchen and den areas, with a graceful railing touched with Jeffersonian detail that echoes the outdoor lanai railing—adding to the indoor courtyard effect. This second master suite, with thoughtfully placed windows and views, becomes very private with just the movement of its shoji-screen slider.
The spacious kitchen's "Persian Blue" granite counters echo the colors and the sea and the lava outside, while travertine tile floors tie all spaces together. Rich redwood cabinets contain all that you need for food preparation at the island electric cook top. With two dishwashers and two separate sinks, all new appliances including an electric oven with convection option and a 50-bottle wine cooler, you'll have no difficulty creating meals for the large rosewood high-gloss dining table that seats 14. Or serve simple breakfasts at the island counter with Japanese saddle chairs.
The entertainment area provides plenty of comfortable seating in the large leather sectional couch with antique Chinese drum glass-topped cocktail table. Large flat-screen HDTVs, one here and one in the downstairs master suite, offer full Time-Warner cable with more than 600 channels, including HBO, films, and economic and political feeds. Another flat-screen HDTV with DVD, iPod port and stereo provide entertainment in the guesthouse.
A narrow antique Chinese table lines the back of the couch and creates a separate sitting area. Just off this area is the den, an appealing space with an elegant desk, WiFi and fax/printer. With a pullout couch and powder room with custom-designed sink armoire, the den provides additional sleeping space.
The downstairs master suite, with king-size bed and private slider to the lanai, has his-and-hers closets and a huge bathroom with Victorian footed soaking tub, double walk-in shower, double vessel sinks, toilet and bidet. The suite is decorated with a hand-carved Indonesian screen depicting local sea life, a shimmering Pat Sweeney painting of jacaranda trees and waterfalls. A 150-million-year-old ammonite fossil complements the sense of antiquity of this ocean-side home.
The downstairs guest suite, with private access and its own views of Puako Bay and the ocean, allows for seclusion and luxury with easy access to the center of life in Sandyside. With his-and-hers lighting over the king-size bed, bathroom with double sinks and a walk-in shower with seat and decorative tile etched with an ancient outrigger canoe, a Camille Ackerman painting and a lithograph by revered Hawaiian artist Herb Kane, your guests will be delighted with their accommodations.
The loft suite in the main house is carpeted, with a marble counter running the length of the room behind the bed and cleverly placed windows for best views of the Kohala coastline. The king-size bed and double-trundle punee (daybed) accommodate a family of four. This suite provides a huge walk-in closet, and the upstairs bath has double sinks and a walk-in shower.
The guest house, above the property's garage, offers great views of the ocean, mountains and the home's gardens. The full kitchen, with stainless-steel appliances, has its own private view of Mauna Kea. With a king-size bed, a pullout double and a pullout twin, it offers plenty of sleeping area. Decorated with Southeast Island furniture, including a glass dining table and four upholstered chairs, it is carpeted, with air conditioning plus ceiling fans. A flat-screen HDTV with DVD, iPod port and stereo provide entertainment. The guest house may be rented separately when available.
