While it’s coming into winter on the mainland, the period of November through January is a great time to visit Hawaii Island, with plenty of events to help you enjoy this little slice of paradise. Here’s just a small sampling:

    • Skies Above Hawai’i is an interactive program showcasing the night sky over Hawai’i. The shows, which take place daily Tuesdays through Saturdays at noon, are featured at the ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center in Hilo, the world’s first 3-D planetarium. The “Stars” show is followed by a 3-D voyage into the universe, based on data from the telescopes at nearby Mauna Kea. For more information, call 808-932-8901, or visit imiloahawaii.org.
    • The annual Kona Coffee Cultural Festival is one of the oldest food festivals in Hawai’i that is celebrated every November. Featuring more than 40 events over 10 days, you can learn about the cultural heritage of the Kona coffee region, the farmers and artisans. There are lots of fun activities for all ages including — naturally! — chances to taste Kona Coffee. For more information, visit konacoffeefest.com.
    • Trees of Hope, with trees lavishly decorated by local artists, will help you get into the “Aloha” Christmas spirit throughout the month of December. The annual event takes place in the lobby of the Fairmont Orchid in the Mauna Lani resort and is open to the public for viewing (You needn’t be a guest at the hotel to enjoy the exhibit.). Trees are sponsored by local businesses, with proceeds going to local charities.
    • The 7th Annual Waimea Ocean Film Festival, January 2 to 10, features more than 60 films, including several world, U.S. and Hawai’i premieres, many with the filmmakers in attendance. The films are screened at various venues including Waimea Theatres, the Fairmont Orchid and the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai. For information, visit waimeanoceanfilm.org.
