The property was chosen by the family matriarch in the early 1950s for its location along some of the best tidal pools in Puako, where children can swim, fish and play, protected by a perimeter of ancient lava flows. The adjacent “Big Rock” rises above the pools, setting the stage for social gatherings and sunset watching. Turtles come to call daily, feeding on the seaweed at the Big Rock’s edge. In the winter, humpback whales pass by, 100-plus yards offshore, cavorting with their young. With the constant sea breezes, the rustling coconut palms and waves provide a natural rhythm of music to this idyllic setting. There is a second small rental cottage on the property, called Tree House. If you have not rented Tree House as well, there may be 1 or 2 guests during your stay, but they are to use the public beach access next door, not your yard to access the ocean. Washer and dryer in the carport are shared. Over the Holiday Season (December 15th through January 5th) Beach Banyan and Tree House are rented together for $1,050 nightly plus taxes and fees. During the non-holiday season they can be rented together for $750 nightly, plus taxes and fees. Hawaii GE & TA tax number 080-763-2896-01, STVR-19-356740, NUC-19-875

Hale Mana Hawaii is a 3-acre property located in Kohala Estates on the beautiful Kohala coast of the Big Island of Hawaii, merely 4 miles north of Kawaihae Harbor. Please note that the property has 2 separate wings under the same roof. The guest wing houses our 1-person operator on-site. Please review our property photos to determine if the privacy measures we have incorporated into the house design suit your privacy need before booking. Hale Mana is the main house wing of the property, custom-designed and custom-built, completed in September 2016. The entire property has an expansive view of the ocean as well the majestic Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, and Hualalai mountains. Spencer, Mauna Kea, Hapuna, and Waialea Bay beaches, as well as Puako Beach Drive are all within 5-8 miles of the property. The town of Waimea, Mauna Lani resort, and Waikoloa Beach Resort are 20 minutes away, providing ample choices of restaurants, grocery shopping, and resort lifestyle. Two scuba dive companies along with kayak and ocean tour operators operate their boats within a 10-15 minutes driving distance from the property. The area is considered to be the drier area of the island, receiving trade winds which keep the sky relatively clear from vog (volcanic fog). Star-gazing on the night skies free of light pollution while floating on our saltwater pool or soaking in the outdoor tub, whale-watching through binoculars during the whale season, watching the moon rise over Mauna Kea, or being awe-inspired by the light of dawn coinciding with the moon set over the ocean are some of other magical experiences you can enjoy from the comfort and peace of the many beautiful lanais on the property. This 2200 square foot home was built in 2002 with an additional bedroom and bathroom added in 2012. It was designed in old Hawaii plantation style with a roomy 1100 square feet of lanai, screens and sliders that open full length plus louvered windows to encourage the tropical trade winds to maintain the home at a comfortable temperature without the use of air conditioning. A seawall on the ocean side of the home protects the landscape from salt-water damage so the lush tropical flora flourishes. The dipping pool outside the north bedroom wing is the perfect spot to refresh after a day of golf or tennis at one of the nearby resorts. Between two tall coconut palms, sway in the cozy hammock while listening to the melody of the rolling waves. The covered lanai features built-in cushioned seating for two, teak lounge chairs and dining table, plus a serving area with sink. Entry to the ocean is at the nearest public shoreline access (2 houses away) as the sea wall prevents direct ocean access from the property. The owners of this home are four of the grandchildren of R.T and Gerry Treadwell, who first purchased the property in the 1930’s when R.T was the doctor in Kohala. One is an architect, who designed it to “alight gently on the land,” distilling details to keep the uncluttered, pared-down lifestyle recalled from those childhood summers. Elegant in its simplicity and consistent style, the home is raised on concrete pilings with a butterfly roof, which collects and channels rainwater, an old custom in this arid climate. Designed to capture the trade-wind breezes and give its inhabitants both communal space and privacy, the home is open, airy and thoroughly “old Hawaii.” Hawaii GE & TA tax number 110-889-1648-01, STVR-19-359287, NUC-19-1116
