Whales Tail Vacation Rental

Virtual Tour:

Combine the sandy beach next to your back yard with the thoughtfully placed windows that give you excellent views from nearly every spot in the house—upstairs and down—and you’ll love the Whale’s Tail for you Hawaii vacation. Not only is the entire ocean-facing wall built with windows, but also an additional row of large clerestory windows above them ensures that the second- floor loft space and bedrooms have ocean and sunset views. The décor throughout the home echoes the beach, ocean, sky and mountain environment: clean white walls, sandy shades of upholstery, blue-gray cabinetry and tiles of sand and sea colors. Original, local artwork—even in the bathrooms—adds to your sense of place in this very special corner of paradise.

Part of a larger compound, Whale’s Tail is set well back from the street, amid mature plantings of large palms, colorful croton and torch ginger, flowering bougainvillea and hibiscus plus both noni (known for its healing properties) and ulu (breadfruit, a staple of the early Hawaiian diet and traditional design for a woman’s first Hawaiian-appliqué quilt…”if you sew ulu, you will always eat”). There is ample off-street parking and a two-car garage.

The front walk takes you up a few, broad stone stairs to enter the living area (or head straight for the yard and beach just beyond!), the heart of your indoor time at the Whale’s Tail. From the deep, comfortable couch and two love seats, you can sink your toes into the sand-colored shag carpet to read, talk, watch the large high-definition television or simply enjoy the views of sailboats moored, kayaks paddling by, people fishing, the historic Mauna Kea Hotel, and Kawaihae Harbor…all amidst the soothing rhythms of the flowing Pacific waters. During the winter months, you’ll be perfectly perched for spotting whales—newborn and mature—visiting our waters during mating season.

Your outdoor options are numerous: from the covered lanai (deck) with dining table and chairs to the grassy landscaped yard with tiled patio and gas grill, you can choose sun or shade with plenty of lounge chairs. Beach plantings include plumeria, banana, and Queen Emma’s lilies. The fragrant tiare-gardenia and naupaka hedges provide privacy yet easy access to the sandy beach, tide pools and calm, protected waters. The reefs off Puako are known for great snorkeling and scuba diving. Your entry from the Whale’s Tail couldn’t be easier. Later, cool off and clean up in the outdoor shower.

In addition to the lanai dining table, indoors there is a square pub-style dining table and 8 pub-height chairs (plus two more at the kitchen island). The large, immaculate kitchen with full ocean views is decorated with beach-cottage-blue cabinetry and matching refrigerator covering, plus counters that sparkle with bits of quartz like a lively ocean on a bright, sunny day. Beautifully coordinated dishware, glassware and linens continue the theme. White double sink, stovetop, oven, microwave and dishwasher all add to the fresh-air feel of the Whale’s Tail.

The first-floor powder room, with twin sinks and deep-blue counter tile, has convenient direct access from both the living area and the lanai. Several original watercolors depict local flora, waterfalls, cottage and paddling canoe.

The second floor—carpeted for comfort and quiet—is a half-story, creating a loft overlooking the living area and its ocean views through the double-decker windows. The large master bedroom has double doors that, when open, create sight lines to the windows and their views. There is a king-size bed with two mirrored closets, ceiling fan, a bathroom with twin sinks, shower/tub, large mirror and cheerful blue and white tile. The large linen closet stores plenty of plush towels.

The second large bedroom has two queen-size beds, ceiling fan, two mirrored closets, full bath with twin sinks, shower/tub, and more original artwork carefully chosen and framed to enhance the sense of place.

Downstairs from the living area is an additional, very private carpeted guest suite with its own personal, walled garden lanai, separate air conditioning, ceiling fan, and television within a quaint lightwood armoire. This room has another large mirrored closet and full bath with double sinks and tub/shower. Vintage Hawaii travel posters and more original, signed local art complete the décor.
