Staying on the Kohala Coast—also known as the "Gold Coast" of the Big Island—offers guests at 2 Papayas an exceptional blend of world-class beaches, luxury accommodations, rich culture, and year-round outdoor adventure:

8. Which airport should I fly into for my stay on the Kohala Coast?

For stays on the Kohala Coast—including Puako, Waialea Bay, Kamuela, and North Kohala—the best option is Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport (KOA):

  • Kona International (KOA):

    • Located just 30 minutes south of major Kohala resorts like Mauna Kea, Waikoloa, Puako, and Waialea Bay—making it the most convenient gateway for the leeward/sunny coast.

    • It’s the busier of the two main Big Island airports, offering frequent direct flights from the U.S. mainland, Canada (like Vancouver), and inter-island connections—ideal for the majority of vacationers .

    • The open-air terminal offers a unique tropical arrival experience, with ground-level boarding and easy navigation .

  • Hilo International (ITO):

    • Located on the wetter, lush east side—great if you're starting with volcano hikes or rainforest tours.

    • However, for the Kohala Coast, it's a longer drive (~1½ hours) and doesn’t offer as many direct flight options—so most Kohala guests prefer Kona.
